Treatment for Misophonia and Hyperacusis
The Hearing and Tinnitus Center of Dallas-Fort Worth is dedicated to minimizing the effects of hearing difficulties, whether it be hearing loss, tinnitus or sound sensitivity disorders including hyperacusis and misophonia. Tinnitus sufferers are often told to “just not think about the tinnitus.” Those with hyperacusis or misophonia may be misdiagnosed and mismanaged. Dr. Land is extensively trained in tinnitus and sound sensitivity treatment programs. A variety of approaches are necessary to fit specific needs, and Dr. Land works to accommodate the individual patient’s situation. She works in conjunction with other health professionals as needed to alleviate the sometimes debilitating effects of these invisible yet real conditions.
What Is Hyperacusis?
Hyperacusis is a sensitivity to loud sounds. The sound itself is unimportant, but the volume is perceived louder than what is normally considered loud. Example: Vacuum cleaners sound like jet engines.
What is Misophonia?
Misophonia is an adverse, spontaneous reaction to a specific sound or sounds which is thought to be mediated in the limbic and autonomic nervous systems. The onset is usually sudden, between the ages of 8 to 13. Typical triggers include ‘mouth noises’ such as chewing, breathing, and lip smacking but can also include pen tapping, paper rustling, and other repetitive sounds.
Evaluation and Treatment
Evaluation includes a comprehensive hearing evaluation, immittance measures and Otoacoustic Emissions Evaluation, extensive history review and patient interview as well as completion of extensive questionnaires for the patient and family members. Dr. Land feels that an educated patient, who has knowledge of the neural and auditory processes involved in these disorders, is better able to manage them and significantly reduce the effects of the conditions in their lives. “Curing” these conditions may not be possible, however learning to rethink and manage them are a reality, one through which Dr. Land works to lead her patients.
