Paula Land

Doctor of Audiology

Dr. Paula Land began her professional life as Lt. Paula Humphreys, USMC after receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree from Roanoke College. She transitioned to audiology in 1984, earning a Master of Science degree in Communication Disorders – Audiology from the University of Texas at Dallas and later received the Doctor of Audiology degree from the University of Florida in 2011.

Dr. Land is Board Certified in Audiology, holds the Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech Language and Hearing Association and is a Fellow in the American Academy of Audiology and the Tinnitus Practitioners’ Association. Having practiced principally in medical diagnostic settings, Dr. Land opened her private practice in 2009. She offers complete hearing health care including comprehensive audiological and tinnitus evaluations and services.

Continually evaluating current and future technologies and professional best practices, Dr. Land believes that only when these are combined with one on one, face to face, individual care are the best results for alleviating the difficulties caused by hearing loss and bothersome tinnitus achieved. Dr. Land is certified in tinnitus management and has served as an off site clinical supervisor for the University of North Texas Department of Speech and Hearing and the Doctor of Audiology Program at the University of Texas at Dallas.

Our Areas of Expertise

At The Hearing and Tinnitus Center of Dallas-Fort Worth, we specialize in hearing disorders including hearing loss, tinnitus, and misophonia. We believe that:

  • Hearing loss is not just an aggravation. It can reduce your earning power, contribute to depression, isolation, and overall stress.
  • Tinnitus, while often not medically ‘curable,’ does not have to be an aggravation you just have to live with. It can be reduced, relieved, and managed much like other chronic, incurable disorders. By approaching it as a problem involving the hearing mechanism, brain mechanism, and thinking mechanism, relief can be found from this sometimes-unbearable condition.
  • Misophonia and hyperacusis are not something made up in your mind. Sensitivity to sounds – be they soft or loud, specific or general – is real and sometimes debilitating. While research is ongoing, these are relatively rare conditions and many well-intentioned professionals are not equipped to identify or successfully treat them. Misophonia and hyperacusis are often misdiagnosed and treated improperly. We have found that our combination of treatments developed from collaboration with other top professionals in the field of sound sensitivities can relieve, reduce, or alleviate the suffering and distress of misophonia and hyperacusis.

A little over one year ago at the age of 66, I developed what is classified as severe tinnitus. I also became extremely sensitive to sound. Over a short timeframe I went from a very mild level of tinnitus which I had for over 20 years to a very loud ringing in the ears.
